AN ICE CAVE IN BOULDER GLACIER towered over visitors in 1932; by 1988, the glacier was virtually gone. If global warming continues at its current rate, the rest of Glacier National Park's namesake formations could disappear by 2030; even with no additional increase in temperatures, they will likely vanish by 2100.
FOR POLAR BEARS, SEA ICE SERVES AS bedroom, grocery store, and commuter train: They mate on the ice, hunt ring seals through holes in its surface, and then travel on it back to their dens. But arctic sea ice is shrinking by 10 percent each decade. By mid-century, summers could be ice-free, with polar bears facing extinction. In lower latitudes like Canada's Hudson Bay, the water is already freezing over later and breaking up earlier. Local residents report that hungrier, skinnier bears are getting into more trouble around town.
