HARTFORD, July 22—A legislative committee voted today to temporarily ban poultry shows in Connecticut, fearing the possible spread of avian influenza.
Three million chickens were sickened in late February during an outbreak of the disease at Kofkoff Egg farms in Bozrah and Lebanon.
The Regulations Review Committee approved the emergency certified regulations requested by the state's Department of Agriculture and Gov. John G. Rowland. The new regulation lasts 180 days, said Representative Arthur O'Neill, a Republican of Southbury who is a committee member. The new ban will affect agricultural fairs held in Connecticut.
The United States Department of Agriculture approved vaccinations for Kofkoff's birds, avoiding a slaughter that could have devastated the state's agricultural economy. The contagious disease infects chickens, turkeys and other fowl.
