It's time to inform the USDA and the Congressional Agriculture Committee members that we will not stand for organic corn being contaminated with the gene-altered pollen from genetically engineered corn. The ONLY way to stop the gene pollution of organic corn is to stop growing genetically engineered corn. The letters below will provide more information.
Request for Immediate Moratorium on Growing Genetically Engineered Corn
Ann Veneman, Secretary of Agriculture
U.S. Department of Agriculture
14th & Independence Ave. SW
Washington, D.C. 20250
Dear Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman,
It has recently come to my attention that the pollen from genetically engineered corn is blowing into organic cornfields, polluting the organic corn.
I am outraged by this contamination and insist that the USDA immediately implement a moratorium on the growing of all genetically engineered corn in the United States!
Ms. Veneman, as Secretary of Agriculture, you surely must be aware that corn pollen can blow for miles. Genetically engineered corn pollen drift is a serious issue and one that needs to be addressed immediately by the USDA.
It is irresponsible for the USDA to allow genetically engineered corn to be grown when there is ample evidence to indicate that organic corn is being polluted as a result.
Please write me back and tell me what you are going to do to stop the pollution of organic cornfields from the pollen drift from genetically engineered corn. As I see it, a complete moratorium on the planting of any more genetically engineered corn crops is the only answer.
Buffer zones of anything less than five miles will not be effective since it has been established that corn pollen can blow more than five miles. And as you know, it is simply not practical to implement five-mile buffer zones. So a complete moratorium is the necessary action the USDA must take in order to adequately address this serious problem.
I will also send letters to agricultural committee members in Congress asking them to review USDA policy on the matter of organic corn pollution from genetically engineered corn.
Please do the right thing and implement an immediate moratorium on the planting of all genetically engineered corn in the United States. This issue is very important to me and to millions of other Americans who purchase products containing organic corn.
I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,

Request for U.S. Senate Hearings on Genetically Engineered Corn Pollution
Senator Tom Harkin
731 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Harkin,
It has recently come to my attention that the pollen from genetically engineered corn is blowing into organic cornfields, polluting the organic corn.
I am outraged by this contamination and request that the U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee hold oversight hearings to discover why the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is allowing this contamination of organic corn to take place.
The USDA is clearly favoring the interests of the biotech agriculture industry to the detriment of the organic agriculture industry. I insist that the USDA immediately implement a moratorium on the growing of all genetically engineered corn in the United States!
