Wal-Mart Gets Subpoena From Texas District Attorney

WASHINGTON—Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) said Thursday that it was served with a grand jury subpoena in August in connection with an investigation conducted by the Office of the District Attorney of Harris County, Texas.

In a quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said the subpoena seeks information related to the waste disposal activities at one of Wal-Mart's photo processing labs.

Wal-Mart Stores said it is cooperating with the investigation. The filing provided no further details on the matter.

Shares of the Bentonvile, Ark., retail chain recently traded at $53.30 a share, up 35 cents.

Also in the quarterly report filed Thursday, Wal-Mart said it reached a tentative settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to pay a $400,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that it violated some Clean Air Act laws relating to the sale of refrigerant products.

As reported in earlier SEC filings, the EPA offered the company the opportunity to settle the allegations without admitting any wrongdoing or violations by paying a $400,000 civil penalty and signing a consent decree with the EPA.

The filing didn't say where the alleged violations took place.
