Telefonica's deal for O2, announced Monday, ranks among the biggest world-wide in 2005. But even with the hefty price, it ranks far below the costly deals sealed during the market's heyday near 2000, when stock values were high.

Merger Monday:
  • Telefonica to Buy O2 For $31.4 Billion
  • Barrick to Bid $9.2 Billion for Placer Dome
  • FCC Approves Two Telecom Deals
  • Novartis to Buy Rest of Chiron for $5.1 Billion
